With vocals so sinister they seem to have been forged in the bowels of Hell and a stage presence that shakes to the bone, King Diamond is without a doubt one of the most iconic names in the metal world. Best known as the frontman of the iconic Mercyful Fate, who were recently in Plovdiv as part of Hills of Rock 2022, he rose to prominence as an icon of proto-black metal in the 1980s – an era marked by occult themes and neoclassical melodies woven into supernatural harmonies. The King’s solo career is a true symphony of darkness, with the concept album Abigail (1987) an example of ingeniously dark theatre, melodic complexity and terrifying beauty.
